It All Starts Here
Visioning for the Future
Important Questions We Considered
- What is the vision that God is giving us for the next chapter of Sterling Wood?
- How is the property on Hwy 90 part of our vision for the future?
- How can we help our church’s members commit to the vision and mission?
- How can our leadership structure better help us fulfill our mission and vision?
Mission Statement
Love God.
Love People.
Make Disciples.
Discipleship Strategy
REACH | ENGAGE | EQUIP | SEND
We REACH people with the Gospel so that they will BELIEVE in Jesus.
We ENGAGE them in community through small groups so that they will BELONG to the body of Jesus.
We EQUIP them to BECOME like Jesus.
We SEND them to BE Jesus where they live, work, and play.
Vision Statement
What would it look like to fully live into our mission?
It All Starts Here: A Vision for transforming our community through discipleship…
We vision to see the North Channel Area, East Harris County, and all of Houston transformed by the power of the gospel.
What does this look like in real steps?
First this vision requires a renewed vision for discipleship.
1. HERE in our CHURCH:
ENGAGING & EQUIPPING
To change our community we have to move past the discipleship of incremental growth. The discipleship of the New Testament multiplied disciples because it equipped and commissioned every believer to be a disciple maker.
If a group of 20 added two new people every week we would be super excited. That would be a growing group. In about 4.5 years (240 weeks), that group would have 500 people!
If a single disciple began to disciple 3 people, we would think that is something small. If after 6 months each of those disciples began to disciple three people that would seem like small growth. After 6 months the “growing group” would have 78 and this little discipleship group would have 12. However, if this continued when the big group reached 500 in 240 weeks, the little discipleship group would 78,732! That is the power of multiplying disciples instead of just adding people.
The biblical model of discipleship is one in which the older generations mentor and raise up the next generations to follow the Lord. Far too often we segregate the ages of our church for everyone’s “comfort” and we allow this crucial aspect of discipleship to wither. We need to recapture the joy and life of intergenerational ministry and discipleship.
One of the key aspects of generational discipleship is the role that parents play as the primary disciplers of their children. We need to raise up this role for parents in our church and become equippers instead of replacers.
Are we only increasing people’s knowledge or are we actually equipping them to become like Jesus? We settle too often for unchanged people as long as they act right and follow the rules. That isn’t discipleship. Discipleship is life changing. We need to lead people beyond knowledge to obedience.
2. HERE in our COMMUNITY:
REACHING & SENDING
Because what happens INSIDE the walls has to bear fruit OUTSIDE the walls!
1. REACHINGTHE PEOPLE HERE:
Are we truly reaching all the people of our community with the gospel?
‣EXPANDED SPANISH MINISTRY
Our community is overwhelmingly hispanic. For many of these people their primary language or their heart language is Spanish. How are we doing at reaching this important part of our community? While our Spanish ministry is a vital part of our church’s life, we need to do more.
WE NEED:
- 1. A Spanish Ministry Pastor
- 2. Additional resources for our Spanish ministry to reach and disciple
- 3. Better integration of our Spanish speaking people into the life of our church
‣MORE DIVERSE LEADERSHIP
Our staff and core leadership are overwhelmingly white and english speaking yet our community is overwhelmingly hispanic and our apartment ministry reaches many black families. We need to add staff that better reflect the make-up of our community to better reach the people God has placed in our midst.
2. MEETING THE NEEDS HERE
God has planted our church in a sea of needs. We see the needs all around us: poverty, homelessness, addictions, mental health crises, broken families, crime. The list goes on and on. Jesus has called us to care for the needs of people and given us the gospel to bring restoration to their lives.
‣MINISTRY TO THE MARGINALIZED
God’s calling in the Bible is clear. We must care for those on the edges of society. God’s heart is turned towards the powerless, the helpless, and the weak. If we want to be in alignment with him, then our hearts have to be turned towards them as well.
WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF THIS?
- – Feeding the hungry
- – Caring for widows and fatherless
- – Rescuing those trafficked
- – Ministry to prisoners
- – Serving the poor
- – Welcoming immigrants and refugees.
‣RESTORATIVE MINISTRIES
For many people in our community, they simply can’t find their way to follow Jesus because of things in their life that have them in bondage. Restorative ministries are those ministries that help free people from these chains so that they can receive the gospel and discover new life in Jesus. Often these restorative ministries help the marginalized people we are called to care for. Many of these ministries can be accomplished through strategic partnerships with other ministries, churches, and non-profit organizations.

- – Addiction Recovery Resources
- – Food and Other Support for Those in Poverty
- – After School Programs for Kids

3. BEING A MISSIONARY PRESENCE HERE
Send is a crucial part of our discipleship strategy. We can’t sit back and wait for people to come to us. We need to take the gospel and the love of Jesus to the places where people are.
‣EVERY MEMBER A MISSIONARY
Our discipleship process isn’t closed until every member views themselves as a missionary where they live, work, and play. We could just be a church in our community, OR, we could be 200+ missionaries spread through every neighborhood of our community.
‣EVERY GROUP A MISSIONAL COMMUNITY
An extension of every member being a missionary is every group taking on a missional identity. Every small group should have a mission that is close to their heart and engages their group in serving, loving, and reaching our community. GROW Ministry grew out of this kind of missional community heart. For one group it could be feeding the homeless. For another it could be reaching people in parks for the gospel. Another group may become a support for families battling addictions. There are endless possibilities, and each group just needs one.
4. EXPANDING OUR MINISTRY SPACE HERE
Our facility is landlocked with inadequate space for growth. Additionally, we have aging buildings and equipment that grow more costly every year. If our ministry is going to have an impact on this community we need a strong presence here in this community.
‣STRATEGIC EXPANSION OF OUR MINISTRY SPACE ON THIS CAMPUS
We have a strategic location in the midst of a community in need. While we are landlocked, there are opportunities, if we have the resources to creatively maximize this campus that would allow us to better reach people around us.
‣ACQUIRE ADDITIONAL PROPERTY FOR MINISTRY IN THIS COMMUNITY
The needs are here, we need to be here. We need to be close to where lost and hurting people are. The types of ministry we are aiming to do will require new spaces. We need to be strategic about pursuing and acquiring property in our immediate area to allow us to expand our ministry presence.
RECOMMENDATIONS TO SUPPORT THIS VISION
SELLING THE PROPERTY ON HIGHWAY 90
Very knowledgeable experts we have consulted believe our property is worth many times more than what was originally paid. Our belief is that God has given us this resource for this time. In a miraculous fashion, God has multiplied the investment of this church many times over to provide the resources to do ministry that we wouldn’t dream were possible. We have the opportunity to direct these resources back into our community for the spread of the gospel.
ESTABLISHING A GROUP OF ELDERS TO HELP LEAD OUR CHURCH FORWARD
The biblical model of leadership is not the leading of one person, but a plurality of spiritually mature and called leaders the bible refers to as ELDERS. We need this level of accountability, stability, and spiritual leadership as we move towards the big and exciting goals.
ELDERS SERVE A CHURCH AS:
Provide care for the congregation and nurture members towards spiritual maturity.
Safeguard the doctrine of the church through teaching and refuting error. Ensuring that the church remains faithful to biblical doctrine.
Provide accountability and oversight to the Lead Pastor and staff. Ensuring the ministries, finances, and operations of the church are managed with accountable, faithful practices.
Provide prayerful spiritual leadership along with the Lead Pastor and staff. Discerning with the Lead Pastor the direction and vision of the church and protecting that vision.
Help resolve conflicts and exercise church discipline. Exercising prayerful discernment to lead the church through difficult questions.
